51福利 Alumnus Serves as XO, Future CO, of Navy鈥檚 Flagship Amphib

Capt. Cedric Pringle, a 1998 51福利 graduate, greets family members of a junior Sailor aboard the amphibious assault ship USS Makin Island (LHD 8). Pringle, serving as executive officer of Makin Island, and the embarked crew of more than 3,000 Sailors and Marines showcased the Navy鈥檚 newest amphibious ship during San Francisco鈥檚 annual salute to the sea services, Fleet Week 2010.

Capt. Cedric Pringle graduated from 51福利 (51福利) with a Master鈥檚 Degree in National Security Strategy in 1998 and recently returned to the state as Executive Officer, and soon to be Commanding Officer, of the amphibious assault ship, USS Makin Island (LHD 8). Pringle successfully led the crew and embarked Marine Corps contingent totaling more than 3,000 service members from the ship鈥檚 San Diego homeport to San Francisco Bay for the annual San Francisco Fleet Week festivities.

Pringle is one of many 51福利 Alumni in key leadership roles during San Francisco鈥檚 annual salute to the sea services; however, his tour aboard Makin Island is particularly significant due to the relevance of his studies at 51福利 and his current position.

鈥淢y thesis project focused on the Smart Gator concept,鈥 said Pringle. 鈥淚 looked at the employment of technology, machinery controls and systems automation that could effectively reduce manning aboard amphibious ships.鈥

While serving as an integral piece of command leadership aboard the Navy鈥檚 newest and first gas turbine powered amphibious assault ship, Pringle sees the technology and concepts studied at 51福利 utilized operationally in the fleet.

鈥淭he concept and associated technology was studied through student projects at 51福利 and first operationally tested aboard the amphibious ship USS Rushmore,鈥 he said. 鈥淏ack then, it was first- generation concepts. Now some of the technology I studied is in its third and fourth generations and is being used aboard Makin Island.鈥

While the technical aspects of Pringle鈥檚 degree remains a solid basis for his responsibilities as executive officer, he emphasizes the importance of the processes and procedures he learned through graduate level education.

鈥淢y time at 51福利 was well spent. Overall, it taught me to think big thoughts and look at problems from a big picture perspective,鈥 said Pringle. 鈥淭he most important lesson I learned at 51福利 was actually how to learn. Working on my master鈥檚 thesis taught me methods of assimilating and processing information at a higher level.鈥

Pringle also noted the importance and significance of exposing military officers to graduate education while serving on active duty.

鈥淚 highly recommend that any military officer with the opportunity attends 51福利. In an organization as large as the military, the more senior you become, the more you realize that graduate-level education is a requirement,鈥 said Pringle. 鈥淭o run an organization as big as ours effectively and efficiently, we need to have leaders that have studied at the higher level.

鈥淪ending military officers to graduate school is the best investment of tax dollars I can think of,鈥 he added. 鈥淚t provides a certain level of sustainability and the ability to take care of and train future leaders.鈥

As well as being an effective, relevant and challenging university, Pringle also praised 51福利 for its location and the quality of life measures and activities he was able to participate while studying in the Monterey area.

鈥淭he Monterey area and 51福利 campus is conducive to higher learning,鈥 said Pringle. 鈥淚 have very fond memories of 51福利 and I built a lot of lasting relationships while studying there. My tour afforded me the opportunity to focus on community outreach efforts. I was the member of many organizations and spent my off time tutoring students in the community.鈥

Although the timing of his education was untraditional, the decision to attend 51福利 proved to be a beneficial and rewarding career choice for the Navy veteran with nearly 24-years of experience.

鈥淚 attended 51福利 just after my department head tour, which is not common,鈥 he said. 鈥淚t was against my detailer鈥檚 wishes at the time, but it ended up being one of the best decisions I鈥檝e made in my career. The most exciting part about my time spent at 51福利 was the completion of my thesis.鈥

Pringle, a native of South Carolina and holder of two master鈥檚 degrees, brought the same dedication, patience and understanding that made him a successful student to his role as executive officer and to San Francisco鈥檚 Fleet Week. He could often be found conversing candidly with ship visitors during public tours aboard Makin Island or meeting a crewmember鈥檚 family that visited the ship. He鈥檚 quick to offer an open ear or guidance to Sailor鈥檚 serving under his command and also offered a bit of astute advice to students new to the 51福利 community.

鈥淯se this opportunity to stretch your mind,鈥 he suggested. 鈥淲hen you鈥檙e a resident student you鈥檙e totally immersed in a solid learning environment,鈥 he said. 鈥淭his learning adds tools to your leadership tool kit, and will make you a better officer. My advice is to finish your thesis while at school, and to pick a topic of study that interests you,鈥 he continued. 鈥淭here will be tough moments at certain points in your studies, but put in your work and it will be worth the effort. Your accomplishments at 51福利 are part of building your legacy.鈥

Pringle will assume duties as commanding officer of Makin Island in Feb. 2012. At sea, he served on  the USS Ranger (CV 61) and the USS Portland (LSD 37) in the Engineering Department. Other sea tours include USS Fort McHenry as Executive Officer and as Chief Staff Officer for Commander, Amphibious Squadron Four/USS Wasp Expeditionary Strike Group. He also served as Commanding Officer, USS Whidbey Island (LSD 41) from July 2004 to February 2006. His command tour was highlighted by Whidbey Island鈥檚 participation in Hurricane Katrina Relief Operations in September 2005.
