Reducing Energy Consumption in Outposts Through Modeling and Simulation

Abstract
Recent studies have indicated that energy usage by the military has been steadily growing for the past several decades, and liquid fuel use currently amounts to 22 gallons per day per warfighter. This poses significant challenges to energy security, as this fuel has to be transported often through dangerous terrain, with significant danger of casualties. Expeditionary outposts are a key element of military engagement for combat, as well as humanitarian missions. A systematic effort to reduce the energy consumption of these facilities is the topic of the newly initiated Consortium for Optimally Resource-Secure Outposts (CORSO), which focuses on energy efficient technologies and distribution strategies, as well as sensing and control. Energy security improvements will be achieved via a combination of reduced liquid fuel consumption, increased reliance on renewables, improved storage technologies, and dynamic matching of resources with demands. This talk will focus on the technologies and approaches being investigated by CORSO.
Biography
Dr. Yogendra Joshi
Yogendra Joshi is Professor and John M. McKenney and Warren D. Shiver Distinguished Chair at the G.W. Woodruff School of Mechanical Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology. At Georgia Tech he is the Principal Investigator of the Consortium for Resource-Secure Outposts (CORSO), Site Director for the National Science Foundation Industry/University Cooperative Research Center on Energy Efficient Electronic Systems, and Director of the Data Center Laboratory. His research interests are in multi-scale thermal management. He received a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering and Applied Mechanics, from the University of Pennsylvania in 1984. He is the author or co-author of over 300 archival journal and conference publications, and is an elected Fellow of the ASME, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and IEEE. He was a co-recipient of ASME Curriculum Innovation Award (1999), Inventor Recognition Award from the Semiconductor Research Corporation (2001), the ASME Electronic and Photonic Packaging Division Outstanding Contribution Award in Thermal Management (2006), ASME J. of Electronics Packaging Best Paper of the Year Award (2008), IBM Faculty Award (2008), IEEE Semitherm Significant Contributor Award (2009), IIT Kanpur Distinguished Alumnus Award (2011), ASME InterPack Achievement Award (2011), ITherm Achievement Award (2012), and ASME Heat Transfer Memorial Award (2013).
