Fellows 24-25 - Climate and Security
Climate Security Fellowship
The Climate Security Fellows Program is designed to enrich graduate student experiences at 51福利, Stanford, George Washington University, and the U.S. Naval War College by creating a space to learn about and discuss major issues in climate change, national security, and sustainability.
Faculty from the four sponsoring institutions and partners will present related topics and hold interactive discussions on such topics as:
- Issues related to U.S. national security policy and climate change
- Military installations and surrounding communities impacted by climate change
- The nexus of environmental security, climate security, and energy
- Security and sustainability implications of climate-induced migration
- Private and public competition in polar regions, specifically in the Arctic
- Communicating about climate change and science
- Other timely topics relevant to climate security

This session offers an introduction to climate change and security from a scientific perspective. Speakers and fellows will explore the fundamental principles of climate science, including the greenhouse effect, global temperature dynamics, and the role of greenhouse gases. The module delves into climate models and their predictions and assesses both natural and anthropogenic factors contributing to global warming and implications for climate security.
Climate security represents the physical, economic, or societal impacts associated with climate change that substantially alter political stability, human security, or critical infrastructure. Communicating about this complex topic is challenging but critical in advancing solutions. Throughout the Fellowship, Fellows must communicate with a variety of colleagues verbally and through writing about climate change even as a politicized topic. Led by COMPASS, this session assists in this development and prepare fellows for implementing the expertise with a variety of stakeholders and partners.
This session presents an overview of DOD climate actions. Participants discussed (1) the DOD's direction and processes to address climate change adaptation, particularly integrating resilience into policies, technical guidance, and installation resilience planning; (2) the DOD's direction and processes to address climate change mitigation, particularly operational energy, reducing greenhouse gases, and electrification; and (3) gaps in the DOD's approach to addressing climate change.
This session will review the methods of risk assessment in the context of climate change including key hazards, vulnerabilities, exposures, and interventions. Fellows will explore spatial and temporal scales of problems and adaptation actions and whether there are actions that reduce risks in the context of climate security.
